Interpretive Sign Program
As you walk the Bruce Trail, it is almost impossible not to notice the natural wonders along the Niagara Escarpment, whether it be the spectacular cliffs, unique rock formations, kettle lakes, or numerous caves. However, the “how” and “why” behind the Escarpment’s special features haven’t always been fully recognizable (or understood) by hikers.
The Land Stewardship Program was created to care for the lands that have been secured for the Bruce Trail. The potential to use these lands to create public awareness of the unique features of the Escarpment, and to promote conservation and protection, led to the creation of Interpretive Signs for Bruce Trail properties.
Signs were developed by the Environment Committee for six properties along the Bruce Trail, with input from the Land Stewardship Committee, the Ministry of Natural Resources, local Land Stewards and many other helpful groups. The signs feature some of the geological history, rare and sensitive flora and fauna, indigenous wildlife, and interesting landscape – in short, all that is unique to the Niagara Escarpment. We hope that the interpretive signs installed along the Bruce Trail will not only educate and inform, but also engender fascination in the natural environment, thus encouraging the public to help us protect more natural areas along the Trail.
